What is the Masseter Muscle?

The masseter muscle is a large muscle at the back of your jaw that helps with chewing. In some people, it can become enlarged due to genetics, habitual teeth grinding (particularly overnight), or excessive clenching. This condition is known as Bruxism. This often results in jaw pain and stiffness in the morning, headaches and dental issues. Furthermore the enlarged muscle can give the jaw a square appearance.

How Does Botox Work for the Masseter?

Botox is injected into the masseter muscle to relax it. This reduces the strength of the muscle which in turn means that the pain, stiffness and dental issuses that usually arise from teeth grinding (Bruxism) are dramatically improved. Masseter Botox can also reduced excessive fullness at the angle of the jaw by shrinking the masseter muscle. This occurs as the muscle atrophies (shrinks) as it is not being used as much.
